Car Corner:
Did you know that it is illegal to throw motor oil, lead-acid batteries, and auto tires in the garbage? Here are some reasons why:
• One pint of motor oil is enough to create an acre of poisonous slick; one gallon of oil is enough to foul the taste of a million gallons of water.
• The average car battery has up to 20 pounds of lead and a gallon of sulfuric acid in it.
• Tires are a nuisance in the landfill, in part because they float to the top even when buried deeply (plus they don’t compact and can become mosquito breeding grounds).

All the items—oil, batteries, and tires—along with antifreeze and oil filters can be recycled at all Lane County Transfer Sites for FREE (except for tires which have a small fee).
