Object Afterlife Art Challenge
September 30 November 27, 2009
The public is invited to attend an opening reception and awards ceremony on Saturday, October 10th from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Planet Improvement Center.
In an effort to bridge the worlds of fine art and scrap art, BRING Gallery and MECCA challenged artists to create thought-provoking works with scrap materials provided by the two organizations. Artists were given two months to complete their creations, using materials surprise-selected by staff. The challenge encouraged the artists to work outside their usual mediums and incorporate scrap materials into their creative process. Thirty artists rose to the challenge. Prizes in five categories, including the Viewer’s Choice Award and Best Use of Recycled Materials, will be awarded at the reception.
Artists, including sculptor Trey Hagen, found working with recycled materials to be both difficult and rewarding. The rewards of reuse have
found a special resonance for participating artists like Hagen and fellow
sculptor Matt Kennedy. “If the recent [return] to recycled and/or transformed materials is any indication, artists of the 21st century may be measured not only by their conceptual and aesthetic prowess, but [by their] choice of materials as well,” Hagen remarked. Kennedy stated, “In the not-so-distant future...the art world will abandon the traditional mediums and embrace repurposing waste through concept and by necessity.”
Previously featured at the Eugene Celebration and MECCA, "Object Afterlife" will be on display at the BRING Gallery from September 30 through November 27.
