Ninkasi Brewing

Ninkasi Brewing

Founded in 2006, Ninkasi Brewing Company has been taking the craft brewing world by storm. Still independently owned, the fast-growing brewery is committed to sustainability through energy production and conservation, water conservation, careful materials selection and recycling, and supporting nonprofit partners like BRING throughout the community. Ninkasi undertook RE:think certification to find new ways to reduce waste and energy consumption at its production facilities in Eugene’s Whiteaker neighborhood.

"It’s been a great opportunity to partner with BRING and have them look at our operations to give us suggestions and tips to improve what we do as a company,” says Ninkasi Co-founder and CEO Nikos Ridge. “It allowed us to look critically at some of our waste streams and material uses and come up with great ways to be sustainable. I would definitely challenge anybody interested in sustainability to take advantage of the services that BRING offers through the RE:think program."

Ninkasi uses solar power, heat exchangers, and skylights to manage energy consumption for its Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified brewing facilities. To help conserve one of beer’s most important resources, Ninkasi uses techniques like reclaiming cooling water from the brewing process for use in subsequent batches and purchasing water reclamation credits Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF). The brewery’s artistically labeled bottles contain up to as 60 percent post-consumer glass and are packaged in cartons made from cardboard contain 100 percent recycled content, with a minimum of 35 percent post-consumer waste content. And because perpetuating a healthy community is key to its mission to “Perpetuate Better Living,” Ninkasi supports more than 700 organizations through its Beer Is Love and Pints For A Cause programs.
