New Materials Donation Schedule

Starting Tuesday, November 1

New Materials Donation Schedule

We love donated materials, and couldn't operate without them. Thanks to the generosity of the community, our materials donations are up more than 7 percent so far this year. We need to sort, price, and merchandise all of the valuable stuff we've taken in so we can rehome it. Starting November 1, donations receiving will be closed on Tuesdays. This will give our staff the necessary time to sort through your generous donations. We will begin taking donations on Tuesdays again in March 2017.

Fall - Winter Materials Donation Hours

Monday, Wednesday - Saturday, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Sunday, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Bringing Social Equity to Community Sustainability

BRING Partners with SquareOne Villages

Bringing Social Equity to Community Sustainability

Most people know BRING as the place that gives second chances to still-valuable stuff. A new effort with SquareOne Villages highlights the environmental nonprofit’s efforts to address the human needs of a sustainable community.

On Monday, February 15, BRING conducted the first of multiple waste assessments for the City of Eugene. BRING staff and residents from Opportunity Village Eugene – a SquareOne project to provide permanent housing for the recently homeless – sorted waste and recycling from the downtown Atrium Building to measure each waste stream and identify opportunities to improve overall waste management.

BRING’s waste assessment service partners with SquareOne Villages – a nonprofit that creates self-managed communities of low-cost tiny homes for people in need of housing – to provide job training and work experience to SquareOne residents with barriers to traditional employment. Waste assessment studies are a hands-on way to quantify waste generated by a home, school or office and determine how much of that waste can be reused or recovered for recycling.

“People know BRING as a sustainability organization,” says BRING Executive Director Carolyn Stein. “Social equity is a critical component of a truly sustainable community. To walk our talk, we have to take care of our most vulnerable citizens. Providing shelter and meaningful work for everyone is important to BRING.”

BRING has in-depth knowledge about waste prevention, materials handling, green building practices, and energy efficiency, which its staff uses to help municipal agencies and local businesses meet their sustainability goals. BRING’s waste assessments will demonstrate how city staff can increase efficiency through materials purchasing decisions. Such studies can identify whole categories of waste products, such as single use utensils and dishware, which an organization can eliminate.

“We are excited to partner with BRING in this venture,” says Dan Bryant, Executive Director for SquareOne Villages. “This is a win-win, providing meaningful employment for people in need of work while reducing waste and improving sustainability. We have said all along that we seek not just to help certain individuals. We want to improve our community, and this program is a step in that direction.”

Re-New Gallery

Submit your reuse creation

Re-New Gallery

As usual, we were amazed by the high quality and the creativity of the entries our customers sent in for our third Re-New Gallery contest. Thankfully, we didn’t have to pick a winner all by ourselves. Our Facebook fans were excited by the opportunity to vote for their favorite submission from the four finalists we posted online. The crowd favored this functional and esthetically pleasing bench, created by Kathi Davis after a trip to BRING. Davis says she was inspired by a cabinet BRING staffers built from used desk and dresser drawers.

Keep sending in your submissions. And thanks to everyone who entered.

How to enter: Send us a photo of your reuse creation—something you built, repurposed, or up-cycled from BRING materials (or any used goods). We’ll send you a coupon good for 50% off your next used item, just for entering. (One coupon per person per quarter, but send as many entries as you like.)

If your photo is selected and published in the UsedNews, you’ll win a $100 gift certificate from BRING.

Include a brief description of your item—what it’s made of, what it’s used for, how you went about making it. Email your photo to info@bringrecycling.org, along with your full name, address, phone, and description.
