10. Water Wise and Whimsical: Front and Back Gardens
This homeowner dove right in to low-water tactics taught in a community workshop. A patchy front lawn has transformed into a cool green oasis of tumbled river stone and shade-loving native plants – a perfect accompaniment to the musical metal sculpture that overlooks the new rain garden. In the backyard, a dying tree and soggy lawn were removed in favor of bountiful beds, art aplenty, and faux turf that requires no water, chemicals, or mowing. A towering cottonwood saved from splitting by an arborist’s careful ministrations provides evening shade. Now that’s sustainable.
