4. Growing Community: Garden with Shared Greenhouse
Whimsy and artistic touches – including gracefully arcing trellises and a fun fairy house for children – add vibrancy to a hardworking domestic landscape grounded in sustainablility and sharing. Soil from Tour Sponsor Rexius and Ticket Sponsor Lane Forest Products fill vegetable beds that grow a third of the produce the family consumes each summer. A greenhouse shared with the next-door neighbors demonstrates economy of space and maximum productivity, sprouting about $1,000 worth of plants from a few dollars worth of seeds twice a year. And the sharing doesn’t stop there. Firm believers in the sharing economy, the owners build community by sharing their truck, tools, materials, and labor with neighbors and by having regular potlucks.
